We tried this spot for our last night in Door County and it was absolutely terrific. I had eaten here when it was T. Ashwell's and I loved the setting but I wasn't in love with the food -- a little too staid for me -- Wickman House is such a nice change and I know that we will be back here next summer. There were five of us for dinner -- my parents, my hubby, me and our 2 year old. They had dinosaurs in the back (not real ones of course) that they brought out for my 2 year old to play with -- that certainly won him over. But what won me over was the food -- I had a delicious burger that was perfectly cooked. We had warm rolls to start the meal and it was all I could do not to eat the whole plate of them. They had a nice salty flavor which was perfect. Moscow Mules for cocktails and delicious flourless chocolate cake with caramel and sea salt for dessert? I'm sold. The fact that they use mostly locally sourced ingredients -- that makes me a happy girl! Service was terrific (as I expected after reading the yelp reviews) and the entire atmosphere was wonderful. They don't try to cram too many tables in which is a nice change from many touristy locations (and from my usual experience in Chicago). This is a must try for anyone coming to Door County who wants an elevated yet still casual dining experience! I'm looking forward to coming back next summer -- for dinner and for brunch!

My husband and I took a party of 7 adults to dinner at the Wickman House. After carefully reading reviews, I made a reservation and looked forward to a wonderful evening. Upon out arrival, there were a few parties waiting to be seated, and we checked in with the very young lady at the hostess stand. She did not acknowledge us, and seemed uncertain as to what to do with us. Another party the same size as ours arrived after us, and they were seated by the hostess and she never returned. A man came to hostess stand, and I made my way up to him to verify that he knew we were there. He too failed to greet us, and mumbled something that I could not understand and promptly disappeared into the dining room. We waited, other customers arrived and became restless that no one was at the hostess stand. My intuition was telling me to leave, but several minutes later the man returned and seated us. Our server was nice, although confused. When describing specials, she said they "may have one or two left" of two of the offerings, she was unsure. The one redeeming part of the evening belonged to the cocktails. They were excellent. When the meals were served, the two in our party who ordered the "staggering chicken" both admitted that the dish was too salty to eat. One person had ordered the pork loin, which was tasty but only lightly warmed, as if it had been sitting too long. My cioppino was very average, as the broth was bland and under-seasoned. By the end of our dining experience, we each had two drinks (either wine or cocktails) three of us ordered sandwiches, one returned the salty chicken for an order of only vegetables, and three of us had entrees. After the restaurant imposed gratuity, our tab totaled $325.00. Very disappointing.

Updated for currency. First of all, don't come here in winter. Just don't. It's off season, they're not on their game, and they'll run out of ingredients. For summer (high season)...3.5 stars. It's okay. Some dishes verge on good occasionally but I've never been blown out of the water by anything here. In Door County, where most restaurants swing between "this is disgusting" and "Oh God, I have food poisoning" depending on the day, okay is pretty damn good, and worth seeking out. But this food is not going to blow your mind--and when you're paying $20-$40/entree, it might not be enough to get you in the door. That said, the service is prompt and friendly, and the porch is fantastic. So if you're fine with spending a bundle on food that is just ok, and soaking in the ambiance, who could fault you for that? Also, they make a mean Tom Collins.

We made a sentimental visit to the Wickman House, recalling when its earlier iteration was the Griffin Inn in the 1980's and we had enjoyed our first overnight visit to Door County. The Wickman House is no longer an inn, but boy, is it a fine eatery! We were accidentally a half hour early for our reservation, but the friendly host seated the four of us immediately in the porch area that we had requested when making the reservation. A large by-the-glass wine selection allowed each of us to order our favorite. A delicious order of warm olives set our palates for the memorable entrees. Around the table, there was steak, chicken, and fish...and fresh from their garden veggies. We were all delighted! Pricing was reasonable and the service was attentive and friendly. The Wickman House surely has a place among the very best dining experiences that Door County has to offer. It is well worth the drive to Ellison Bay.

One of the BEST dining experiences we've had! Located in an old home, The Wickman House is beautifully simple with their primary focus on their guests and, of course, excellent food!!! MENU It changes from time to time but is full of tasty options no matter when you go. Plus, their kitchen is creative and would be happy to modify something for you to enjoy (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free ... you name it). FOOD On this visit, I had an AWESOME quinoa burger with an AMAZING aioli that made my mouth dance. My wife loved their pork tenderloin with gnocchi! The presentation was top notch as well. SERVICE They are well staffed and VERY attentive to their guests!!! They go above & beyond to make sure you enjoy yourself. Then, on top of it, a staff member walked us to our car in the pouring rain with an umbrella. Fantastic restaurant: Go!!!

Beautiful setting, great food and wonderful service...we highly recommend the "old standards" like the Crudo, the Caesar Salad and the Staggering Chicken. Expensive, but worth it.

Favorite restaurant in Door County! Not only is the Wickman House charming and lovely, the food and service is wonderful as well. We started with cheese curds & oysters, then my husband and I both chose the scallop special for our entree (amazing!), and we even had dessert - he chose the s'mores ice cream sandwich (we both agreed this was the best one!) and I had their flourless chocolate cake. We were also very happy with their drink selection; my husband had beer while I enjoyed a glass of Cabernet and Primitivo. Though we didn't try one, the cocktail list was very diverse and unique! We have recommended this restaurant to several friends visiting Door County, and every single one of them have raved about their experience! Needless to say we will be returning for many, many more delicious dinner dates. :)

I don't like traveling to places, no matter how beautiful or amazing the attractions of place may be, with bad food. That's why I love Wisconsin in general, and Door County in particular. The state has rich food history kept alive in fish boils and supper clubs. Wickman House nods to the past and does its thing in the here and now. This visit my girlfriend again loved her cocktail. The grounds have been made even more beautiful. It was busy at the end of their dinner service on Monday night: I can only imagine that its the place to be on a weekend night. Its hard to beat the ambience of an old country home at the end of peninsula, the final gathering place before Death's Door. We had the ribeye, a salad of locally sourced vegetables, and the lobster BLT. For dessert, peanut butter ice cream with dark chocolate tuile. Wickman House respects the past, offering the supper club standard prime rib on Saturday nights this summer (my girlfriend desperately wants it,) with all the updates a restaurant would need to succeed in competitive market, like Chicago. From the craft cocktails, local beer, sourcing the food from family farms and preparing it well, to the style of the service and the rustic vibes, I'm a big fan.

This is a MUST stop when you're up in Door County! We thought this for several reasons: Service: The staff was very knowledgable and friendly. They gave genuine and descriptive responses when asked questions about their menu. They were attentive, yet weren't smothering. Food/Drinks: There are many special drink options available on the menu. Our favorites were the Moscow Mule and the Old Fashioned, although there were many interesting varieties. The food was TO DIE FOR. It is some of the best food my husband and I have ever had. We started with the Whitefish taco, oysters, and cheese curds. The sauces that came with each were homemade and original. No cocktail sauce or ketchup here! For our entrees, my husband had the burger and I had the staggering chicken. Honestly, it was some of the best chicken I've ever had. It came with smashed fingerling potatoes and fresh seasonal veggies. The burger came with hand-cut fries and a homemade pickle. The small touches really made the difference! Ambiance: The restaurant was quaint and warm. It is a perfect mixture of the old and the new. They grow many of their own items and even have a horticulturalist on site. They also have a pastry chef that makes items special each day with fresh seasonal fruit. Very impressive and a must-stop!

A solid 5. Beautiful atmosphere. Delicious cocktails, nice wine and beer selection. Excellent service, delicious oysters, yummy beet salad, very nice bread. We ordered the mahi mahi special in a mint sauce--so good--and the filet--perfectly done, A very positive experience all around.

I loved so much about this place. Not only is the ambiance lovely, but the cocktails are amazing. This feels like it is a big city establishment but it's in a cute, small town.

We have been coming to Wickman House since it opened and have been saying, 'this is our new favorite restaurant'! Our recent dinner this past Monday was spectacular! My husband had the best oysters he has ever had (half price during happy hour was nice too!) and his rib eye steak was delicious. As for the Staggering Chicken I had...well, I'm thinking it was absolutely the BEST chicken entrée I've ever had (can't wait to order it again). How did they get the skin so crispy and tasty and the chicken itself stayed so moist and flavorful? And the delicious wine and mushroom sauce with seasonal veggies was scrumptious. The service was excellent and all of the wait staff helped each other out...all in the effort of making your dining experience very enjoyable. The setting couldn't be nicer...we were seated on the porch, which was VERY comfortable and so nice, even with a brief rain shower outside. Lastly, one of the owners greeted us on the way out, shook our hands and thanked us for coming to their restaurant. Another touch that makes this a special place. The owners are really the ones to thank for really doing things right and giving customers memorable dining experiences! Sue and Sam W.

I went there for drinks with my husband for our 2 year anniversary. Sadly I couldn't eat most of the food due to allergies and restrictions I have. However, I had an amazing drink made with gluten-free vodka. It tasted so fresh. The service was good and we had a couple yummy oysters too. My husband had the best Moscow Mule he's ever had. Kudos for actually putting it in the copper mug.

Door County is lucky to have a restaurant on par with the best in Chicago. Hip enough for the 25-35 crowd, but still comfortable for our parents. It's cocktail program is aware of the trending classics, and it's fresh oysters are ordered from some of the best locations. I love the live music and authentic decor which pays homage to the building's past while keeping a contemporary minimal farmhouse vibe. The farm to table philosophy is literal here, with many vegetables coming right from the restaurant's backyard! My only complaint is that the menus were not updated so the salad we ordered was very different from the salad we received. The manager apologized and the server suggested we order another plate, but did not comp the first, which is unusual and awkward customer service for a place like this. Overall very good and there is nothing else like this in Door County - definitely planning to return!

What an amazing experience. Gorgeous atmosphere, fresh thoughtfully prepared dishes with ingredients from local farms in Door County. Simple easygoing dishes with a major sophistication. And to top it off, Gretchen was the best server I've ever had in my life. She handled my crazy family like a champ and never skipped a beat. Can I live here please?

Who ever reads the magazines in the motel? I did once. This time! There was an article about this restaurant and it sounded perfect--local sourced food, creative application. This place has atmosphere--as you drive up the peninsula making sure of the final turn onto Mink River Road (what a name!), you start thinking of a Raymond Chandler movie. Turning off of Mink River, you turn into the lot. You expect some 50's roadsters to be parked there. When you walk in, you see the old house stripped of earlier years, now having its core personality--wood floors, wood bar, spare walls, spare tables. It's netherworld--not 50's, not now--somewhere relaxed, stylized and enjoyable. We waited a few minutes for our table in the bar. I hate to say this but we were not drinking that night. The two bartenders emoted the confidence of drink conjurers extraordinaire. We were seated at our table--two at a four-top. The room is spacious and you have enough room to enjoy your conversation without having to whisper secrets. 'The Meal': rolls, Wickman House salad (greens, local radishes, blue cheese), house made ravioli and blueberry ice cream, apricot sorbet basil lemon Sunday with crumble. I wouldn't normally mention the rolls despite many restaurants making a statement of uniqueness--but the rolls had a salted top. I understand the taste trend for salting certain dishes (generally sea salt)--this diner says once you've done it, enough. (Oh well). (My partner had the flourless chocolate cake and made the same observation about the caramel sauce.) One gets the sense you are at the chef's summer home--they've wandered into the garden and found some delightful ingredients. Friends drop by and the meal is prepared. Salad is not salad anymore--this one came with a great mix of local greens and radishes. The blue cheese dressing was placed on the plate and the greens over. The simple idea allows for the dressing but avoids any over saturation. The ravioli consisted of a very subtle lemony ricotta. Mushrooms collected from nearby. Fresh and savory! If you've read above, you are feeling sorry for me, not having a drink. So I deserved a dessert, clearly. I went with the Sunday and it was heaven! Small contrasts in taste and flavor. Different tartness and sweetness from the ingredients. Wonderful! When we walked out of the restaurant, it was very Wisconsin dark. You could see the constellations. It fit in with the meal.

The food was excellent, but overshadowed by the terrible service. Our waitress apologized several times for being inattentive and even offered to buy us dessert to make up for it. Amazed with the amount of help and several different people approaching our table from the hostess, two others floating around filling waters, and bartenders....yet our waitress was absent most of the evening. Whenever she did appear, it was with an apology. We had high expectations after seeing this restaurant featured on Wisconsin foodies, but left disappointed. Bummer.

Great farm to table. You know where the ingredients come from and it shows in their food. Craft drinks and a good wine menu. Will be a regular stop in Door County visits. Owners were very personable and took time to talk about their restaurant and story. Don't miss out!

Wickman House is as close as it gets to perfect. First, people here remember customers. Every time we have gone there, we have been greeted by name and treated like family, as friends returning to a favorite place. Their specialty drinks are beyond just saying delicious. Try their version of a mojito or that Wisconsin favorite, the Old Fashioned. If you love martinis, here is the place to have a dry one, slightly dirty, with 3 olives. Their offering of fresh oysters is the best I have ever had. Servers know their business here and if you ask them about wine, drinks, food, know that you may trust their recommendations. One great joy: their chef actually knows what "blue rare" means and will cook your steak so, should you request it! I love it that so much of their food is locally sourced also. Wickman House offered excellent food in a setting that harkens to Door County's past, complete with fireplace! If there were but one place I would suggest you go "out to eat" in Door Country, I must say, go to Wickman House. The Best of the Best!

Made a reservation weeks before our dinner. Arrived with our party of 8. Host claimed to have no record of the reservation. He acted as though we were making up the reservation. The accommodation that they made was for us to have drinks out on their patio until a reservation opened up at another restaurant we had never heard of?? Confused/Shocked as to why more would not be done to fulfill a reservation of a larger party. We and our money will not be back. So disappointing.

Superlative. Don't judge me of hyperbole until you visit. I went with three friends en route to Canada from Chicago (it made sense to us). In my (unwritten) book, a restaurant should be judged on three things: the food and drinks, the ambiance, and the people. Wickman House crushes all three. First, food and drinks. We had several superb cocktails (think PDT in NYC or Barrel House Flat in Chicago) that blew us away. The Bee's Knees, Rusty Leaf, and Golden Boy were our favorites. I will pine for these cocktails. For food, we had the beef tongue starter, the Staggering Chicken, the burger, the steak sandwich, the ravioli, the Caesar salad, the house salad, and the peanut butter ice cream and chocolate caramel cake. Phenomenal. Every bite. The chicken lived up to its name and was my favorite but our table couldn't agree on what won best dish. And the oysters! We had an epic assortment of east and west oysters, which I did not expect to find in Door County. Second, the atmosphere. Wickman House is grand. The wrap around porch was my favorite but I also loved the classic bar. The whole space has a patina of age mixed with humility. It's not stuffy and feels like a throwback. Third, the people. Joe and Mike, the proprietors, were friendly and funny. Our waitress Seercha (my phonetic spelling of her Gaelic name) was knowledgeable and engaging. We loved her. Everyone we talked to was warm. In sum, Wickman House delivers spectacular food and cocktails in a charming setting and is filled with people you want to get to know. Go there right now.

My family went to Wickman House last night and had a great evening. The menu is locally sourced and the food was amazing. We have heard good things and considering we live up here part time, we thought it was time to check it out. Note to self: why did we wait so long. The pork taco appetizer was so delicious, my first thought was that I should have ordered 5 of those for dinner (which apparently happens from time to time). I felt that way until our meals arrived. My wife had the Staggering Chicken and I had the grass fed Ribeye. Both were perfectly prepared and the presentation was wonderful. The ambiance is romantic, but casual. There were small parties and larger parties out on the patio (verandah), but the interior was quaint and welcoming. We had our baby and felt completely comfortable (note, we ate early) as it was sufficiently loud to not feel like we were out of place with a newborn. I was laughing early on as the restaurant staff is full of college aged women. Every time they walked by, they kept smiling at me. In my mind I thought "I still have it!" only to realize that they are just friendly and smile at everyone. Bubble was officially burst, but it provided a good laugh for my wife and I. Highly recommend for amazing food, cool decor and ambiance, great staff, and fair prices. Not cheap, but not outrageous either for nice dining with quality ingredients.

Wickman House is excellent. The oysters and white fish were super fresh, the drinks were fantastic, and our server was very attentive. We sampled all the oysters of the day, the some tacos, the beet salad, and the lobster BLT, plus their amazing rolls. They have a Baker that comes in every morning and it really make a difference. I would def recommend splitting the lobster BLT, it was large and rich. The taco of the day was beef tongue, which was great, despite my reservations about eating tongue. Everything there was really fresh and well executed, including the cocktails. We will certainly be back.

Our very favorite restaurant in all of Door County! Have never had a bad experience, including our most recent visit!!! We have been coming here for years, and planned to go on Thursday night for the crab boil. Unfortunately, word has gotten out about how awesome this place is and by the time we called to make a reservation nothing was left! However, because the staff at Wickman are incredibly wonderful, they seated us right at 5pm in a slightly larger table as long was we were out in time for the party who reserved the table at 630pm. Admittedly, we were a little rushed - but the staff also came to the rescue solving that problem and took our desserts out to the front picnic tables for us to finish our meal at our leisure!!! The food is delicious; everything from the starting craft cocktail to the coffee at the end (and did I mention the dinner rolls - amazing!). The crab boil is easily enough food for two people, but it will be hard to share since there are so many lovely menu options - you will want to try everything! You cannot go wrong if you dine at Wickman House!!!

What a lovely place! Besides being in love with the ambiance (authentic and homey yet upscale) the service was fabulous (they actually understood that we wanted to have a more leisurely drawn out dining experience and didn't rush us) and the food was fantastic-my ravioli was the perfect portion size without making me feel like I was going to explode. Would definitely come back next time we're in town!

So upon our arrival, they promptly violated two of my family's traditional restaurant rules of thumb: 1, Never eat at a restaurant where they inexplicably keep you waiting to sit down but you can see multiple empty tables; 2, Never eat at a restaurant where you have to wait a long time to be seated even though you have a reservation (~25 minutes, in our case). But they did do their best to redeem themselves from there. The bar has very classic cocktails in beautifully classic stemware (though the Corpse Reviver #2 wasn't quite as good as the one I've made at home). The salads are full of fresh local ingredients and tangy and satisfying. The burger is an inspired mess of pickled onions, beef, and a bun that can contain the whole thing. Probably the best eating in Door County that isn't a cherry pie. But it would have been nice if we'd gotten an apology as we stood there waiting.

Fantastic. I have visited twice now and have been equally impressed by both visits. The restaurant is adorable, I absolutely love the outdoor dining space with the string lights. It all just oozes charm. The staff is cheerful and knowledgable about the menu and the local farms who provide the restaurant's ingredients. The cocktail list is extensive and exciting, I ordered a mojito and shared sips of my boyfriend's pisco sour. I shared the crab boil with my boyfriend and it was phenomenal: 2lbs of crab legs with mussels, potatoes, corn on the cob served with clarified butter and siracha aioli for an affordable $45. The fresh baked bread was killer and the creme brûlée was a tasty way to round out the meal. This is one of my favorite spots in Door County & I look forward to visiting again in the future.

We stumbled upon the Wickman house one night after our sunset boat ride and it was amazing! I highly highly recommend the fried green tomatoes. The service was great, the food was exceptional. At one point someone came and asked how the food was and when he walked away the waitress said he was the owner. Really great experience... can't wait to go back! :D

Just a tremendous place. First, the story....two guys who had served there a decade earlier (when it was a different establishment) transplant themselves back to Door County from Madison and Brooklyn to create something new, innovative, fresh and exciting while still keeping the Door County charm and not losing touch of what made the place special for them. No easy task and they nailed it. I think the bar at the Wickman House might be my favorite anywhere. It's intimate, handsome, and it comes with fantastic cocktails. The Rusty Leaf in particular is just spectacular. And the food! Farm to table, delicious, and just upscale enough to make it a special night out without any of the pretension of a white table cloth kind of place. Add to that the ambiance and the love these guys and the staff put into the place and it's worth traveling any distance for a meal there. Can't recommend it enough, and am really rooting for everyone there to keep succeeding as they already have.

To say that this is definitely the best restaurant in Door County wouldn't be saying much at all, but the meal I ate at the restaurant was one of the best I've had in Wisconsin since moving to Madison a year ago. The restaurant is located in a historical house and the ambiance is terrific. I was impressed by their cocktail list, they had more than one vegetarian option (!!), and the food was delicious. If I had time, I would've gone back for another meal there. They use local, seasonal ingredients and the quality of the ingredients is apparent in the food. If I'm ever in Door County again, this will be my first stop.

Always delivers! Beautiful historical home that serves fresh ingredients in both their cocktails and food. It can be a far drive, particularly at night, but it is well worth it. We are consistent Wickman House patrons every summer and fall. We look forward to a night or nights spent dining at their restaurant. The brunch is also delicious. I think it's safe to say at this point, we've covered the full menu and everything is fantastic. And if you just go for a drink, be sure to order their old fashioned.

I'm known for hyperbole, but I'm not lying when I say that The Wickman House gave me the best meal I've ever had. My wife (henceforth referred to as Wifequist) and I came to Door County to celebrate our one-year anniversary, and we came to the Wickman House for our celebratory anniversary dinner. It did not disappoint. Location: Pretty neat -- the house is tucked into the woods, and is off the main highway. When you go there, you feel like you've been let in on a secret spot. Service: FANTASTIC. Everyone -- from the host, to the bartender, to other servers -- was exceedingly friendly, cheerful, and good-looking (not that that matters, but it makes a meal better). Plus they were all wearing bowties -- always a plus in my book. Our server, John (?), was incredibly knowledgeable about every detail in the menu (despite having just started a few weeks prior to our dinner), and that menu was a little intimidating at first. He was quick to refill our water glasses, checked in with us several times, and was very attentive to our every request. Drinks: Apparently the cocktail menu is new, and boy, was it good. Both Wifequist and I had three cocktails apiece -- we couldn't believe how good every drink was! I had a Moscow Mule and two other brandy-based cocktails (can't remember the names, unfortunately). Food: Our server recommended several items from the menu, and Wifequist went with "the best hamburger you'll ever have," and she couldn't stop raving over it. They were accommodating to her gluten intolerance, and served it over a bed of mixed greens. I went with the ribeye, and from the very first bite, I was in love. It was absolutely perfect. I can't recommend this place enough -- do yourself a favor and visit this Door County gem! I can't wait to return!

My husband and I spent a week in Door County over July 4 and were incredibly lucky to have found this amazing restaurant in Ellison Bay. The setting feels like home (Austin, Texas) for us. Reminds us of a plantation style home (although not as fru-fru - much more hip, rustic farmhouse) on a beautiful wooded property with fabulous indoor, outdoor and screened-in porch seating. The food was simply amazing. My husband had the rib eye (to die for), and I had Cioppino (best scallops I've ever had). We had mussels as an appetizer. They were very fresh and served with a fantastic sauce (no cocktail sauce here). In fact, we loved the mussels so much that we came back two night later for multiple servings at the bar. It's also important to note that nearly everything on the menu is farm-to-table. You actually know WHERE your food came from and that it was raised with compassion. As for the drinks, Wickman has an excellent array of wines & a fabulous cocktail menu with everything from The Bee's Knees to the Moscow Mule. You can't go wrong with anything from this list. To top everything off, the service is incredible. One of the investors (who also works in the bar) is a young man from New York with a great vision. He - along with his entire staff - are knowledgeable, professional and uber-friendly. Truly a gem in Door County and a place you do not want to miss.

fantastic! This restaurant scores on so many key aspects. it is in a rustic house with an authentic old-wisconsin feel. the service is friendly and the bar has an extensive selection of cocktails the menu uses a lot of local ingredients that are prepared phenomenally. the burger is delicious and the pork-chop was perfectly cooked. the whole meal is really an experience. highly recommend! Also, the music - a 50s/60s mix of doo-wap and early rock - is a refreshing touch.

Went here for a special dinner. Definitely a big step above the traditional fare in northern Door County. Wonderful atmosphere although could have done without the fire in the fireplace on a 70 degree night. Our server, Sarah, was truly a gem. Literally the best service I've had in a restaurant in a seriously long time. Amberjack was very good. Prime rib was a little disappointing (tough) however Sarah and the manager proactively addressed the issue without being asked to do so. Quality of locally sourced food was apparent. Highly recommend you dine here.

This was our first time at Wickman House and it was a lovely evening. The food was excellent,...juiciest chicken I have ever eaten....and the craft cocktails were fantastic. So many choices to choose from. The outdoor gardens are beautiful and the interior of the restaurant is charming. Staff was knowledgeable and very friendly.

If your hours say you're going to be open for brunch, be open or post a sign on your front door saying otherwise. This restaurant is too far north to venture up and find it's closed. Also your website says nothing about fall hours do there is no way to find out if it's closed otherwise. Wasted an entire Sunday morning driving to Ellision Bay. Won't make that mistake again.

First things first: what a cool place. While the property has been around for a long time (formerly T. Ashwell's), under new ownership this historic property was a breath of fresh air! Down to brass tacks: 1. We were immediately and warmly welcomed upon entering, and we were offered a seat at the bar. We enjoyed such friendly conversation with both the staff and other happy diners we opted to eat right at the bar! 2. I can't eat gluten, dairy, or eggs - I'm nobody's favorite. Once I mentioned it to the super-knowledgeable, chatty bartender it was such a non-issue (no eyerolling, etc). Then the food came out and wow! The chef just 'whipped up' an alternative sauce for my dish that was so flavorful and it was something I could feel really good about eating. 3. To bliss out even further, we ordered the flourless chocolate cake with french sea salt and caramel. Words will not help you understand this cake. Try it for yourself! So perfect. 4. There was a SUPER cute baby floating around this place. Friendly chatter, accomodating kitchen/staff, memorably delicious food AND THEN ADORABLE BABIES? Can't beat it.

Really enjoyed our meal. I started with a great cocktail, then the special soup and Friday fish fry. Everything including the dessert sampler was fantastic. Not cheap, but a great meal.

Love the old world vibe here when you walk in.....attentive wait staff but never in your face..I do like the food and have had almost all their dishes on the menu which are prepared well and are very flavorful, especially the meats. Beer and wine lists are well represented in styles and reasonably priced. They always have some good craft beers on hand. My only knock on the place would be the main menu hasn't changed in the three years they've opened. They have good specials but I think the chefs are talented so a complete change up would be nice once in a while.... still enjoy it though

Our experience at Wickman House was tremendous. Door County needed this restaurant! Better late than never. The ambiance is quaint and historic with a nice touch of class. We sat inside, but there is a screened-in porch and a private gazebo where you may sit. Our server was quite nice and energetic - but he seemed a bit busy (understandable ... the restaurant is still quite new). He came back to ask me what I ordered for my drink. No biggie. I ordered the Staggering Chicken - and it was phenomenal! Simplistic but so abundantly flavorful. My husband enjoyed his Shrimp Tempura very much. Our 2 guests also enjoyed their steaks! The fresh homemade dinner rolls with the sea salt butter blow your mind. I could eat those alone! We had a delicious lemon tartlet and creme brulee for dessert and were not disappointed. We really appreciate that they source their produce and protein from the local farms in the Door County area. The only negative is the noise. The hardwood floors and historic build of the structure make everything sound louder than it is! Again, I was blown away at how delicious everything was. Hands-down we will return once we are back!

Our experience at Wickman House was fantastic. We ate there on an evening that was very cold and windy. They have seating on the covered porch, but it was a little chilly for us, so we waited at the bar for a table to open up inside. Boy were we glad we did. While we waited, we got to talk to the bartender (one of the owners) who explained the story of how Wickman House came to be. It's an interesting story, and he was very engaging. My wife had a sangria (house recipe) and said it was the best she'd ever had. After about 20 minutes, we were seated in the main dining area which is very comfortable and welcoming. We started our meal by sharing the soup du jour ("sounds delicious, I'll have that"): tomato garlic soup. It was fantastic; very tangy and rich in flavor. We shared two sandwiches for dinner: The pulled pork sandwich and the lobster club. The pulled pork sandwich did not have a lot of barbecue sauce on it, but it was very good and stood on its own. It wasn't the best I'd ever had, but I didn't expect that. The lobster club was almost the highlight of our dinner. It tasted wonderful and included bacon. Finally, we shared a dessert because it sounded too good to pass up: the flour-less chocolate cake. It was extremely rich and very tasty. To top it off, they drizzled caramel and sprinkled sea salt over the top of it to give a sweet/salty flavor. All in all, this was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while.

I could easily give Wickman House 6 stars and not feel badly about it. Don't think I could have designed a better dinner experience: not only outstanding food, but a beautiful, well-furnished space and gracious staff (most of them decked out in bow ties). My wife and I stopped in after a day of biking on Washington Island. We were able to get a last-minute reservation, and nobody looked down on us for showing up in pretty casual apres-bike apparel. I was impressed right away by the casual elegance of this place. Some nice entrees on the menu, but also some more affordable options (ie the veggie burger). Lots of locally sourced ingredients. Fairly extensive wine list. You might be able to get a more elegant meal in a big city somewhere, but I truly think this place has to be among the best in Door County, and probably in the top 5 dinners I've ever personally enjoyed.

You do not want to miss this place the next time you are in Door County! My husband and I went to Wickman House to celebrate our anniversary and had a most delightful evening. The atmosphere is inviting and unpretentious. The staff were very professional and did not miss a beat throughout the night. The wine and beer selections are top notch and offered at all price points. The hosts' mission of providing high quality, locally sourced food is something that we appreciate anywhere we go, and something that Door County could use more of. We are headed back to Door County in a few weeks with the sole purpose of returning to this restaurant. Kudos, Wickman House!

Made a couple trips to the Wickman House recently on a vacation this fall to Door County with my parents and husband. The place really was the epitome of charming -- such a Wisconsin treat for us since we no longer live in the state...comfortable, classy but not pretentious, and just plain delicious. Definitely worth the trip to Ellison Bay if you're staying in a nearby city on the Peninsula. Over the course of our stay we were able to try a number of things on the menu: the cheese/meat plate (which is not stingy and includes a ton of delicious goodies), the harvest (?) salad with awesome cherry vinaigrette, the pan fried perch (light and not fishy), the coconut shrimp (very flavorful), the ravioli with a delish chunky tomato sauce, the pork chop (thick cut and juicy), the staggering chicken (a morsel of which was not left on the plate) and the mother-effing prime rib. That prime rib was a sight to behold -- and did not disappoint. We had desserts one night and the chocolate cake was pretty much the end of everyone. They also have a terrific beer list and the wines recommended to us by the staff were great. This place is a step up from the rest of the restaurants in the area and somewhere I think will last -- it could definitely compete with any of our favorite restaurants in DC, and offers a better value at that. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Door County.

I'm sure it was with some sadness on the part of regular Door County diners when T Ashwells passed into the Netherland of lost restaurants, yet as one establishment recedes another rises to challenge your palette and pleasure. And I believe Wickman House is just that type of place. I wouldn't compare the two: they're too different to make any comparison useful save that they both occupy the space in Ellison Bay. Wickman House has redecorated that space to a more rustic and casual place. The menu and wine list is much pared down to a list of things that are found locally and the emphasis is on good service and good food well prepared. Our table sampled the oysters and the white fish ceviche with, of course, dried cherries mixed in. And yes it worked. We paired with a South African Chenin Blanc which worked very well with the oysters and a little less so with the ceviche. We also sampled their take on an old classic: a wedge of lettuce with blue cheese and crumbled applewood smoked bacon. Entrees included the chicken-quite a hit; the ravioli-bursting with mushroom flavors; the French cut pork chop with salt roasted potatoes, summer squash, and a dollop of too-sweet-for-my-taste applesauce on top, and the cioppino- lovely with its hearty red gravy. The California Sangiovese actually worked with all the above and our server was most gracious enough to let us sample two other wine choices until we settled on the Sangiovese. In a rare move, we ordered a few desserts, including the flour-less chocolate torte drizzled with caramel and coarse salt, a Creme Brulee which wasn't firm enough for our liking, and a scrumptious lemon tart with blueberries adding an "a-ha" moment of flavor offset to lemony custard top! Oh, and lest I forget with finished with two of the most amazing digestives I can recall: Cocchi vermouth di Torino and the Cocchi aperativo bianco americano. If you ever see this on a menu, ask to try a small amount of either one: you won't be disappointed. To sum it up: this place has the chops to to make it in a very tough and seasonal market and with a little luck they will continue to innovate with their offerings.

Very nice dining experience but for some reason, I expected just a little bit more.... We visited about 8:30 p.m. on an August Friday night (didn't have a reservation). Waited no more than 5 minutes while a table was set (which gave us an opportunity to look over the menu). Hostess was wonderful....apologetic for the delay, cheerful and friendly. It took a while for our server, Chip, to make it to our table. He explained the nightly specials, took our wine order and then absentmindedly left with our menu's. When he returned with our wine, I had to ask for our menus to be returned (no biggie, but I couldn't help but think that Chip is new to food service) I ordered the NY Strip and my husband ordered the Cioppino (a seafood stew). Prior to the arrival of our meals, wonderful dinner rolls with sea salted butter were served. However, they were "refrigerator" cold when they arrived to our table and I would have enjoyed them more had they been served room temperature, or even slightly warmed. When my strip steak arrived, it was extremely tender and served with a flavorful mushroom demi glaze. However, it was slightly over cooked (I ordered it medium rare and it arrived more on the medium side). It was served with smashed red potatoes and a delightful medley of grilled zucchini, summer squash, carrots and some leafy green....maybe kale? My husband's Cioppino had outstanding flavor (he thought it better than that served at a favorite local Italian place) but it was a bit more meager in size (still plenty to eat, though!). While the shrimp, whitefish and mussels were done to perfection, the sea scallops were just a wee bit rubbery. His stew was topped with a wonderful grilled baguette. For dessert we ordered the lemon tart which was outstanding! The combination of the lemon combined with sweet blueberries and a crisp, delightful crust was the perfect finish to our meal. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice although at times, it got rather loud in the main interior dining area (we were seated next to the stone fireplace). The wine selection is outstanding. Our server was just so-so....Not bad, but also not great. Chip, you're obviously new to food service so hang in there! You WILL improve (I work as a server myself so I know what I'm talking about ). I LOVE that the Wickman House utilizes local products/suppliers whenever possible. We will be back!

This is the business which used to be run by T. Ashwell and was inconsistent but at times great! I intend on going back after trying this last summer... and was very underwhelmed. I'll give it another go.

We had two delightful dinners at Wickman House during June/July 2012. This could become our new go-to restaurant. Professional and friendly staff. Comfortable seating in a spacious dining area, we were seated inside but some people were eating on a lovely enclosed porch. The menu provides choices for everyone. We appreciate that they serve locally sourced vegetables, fruits, beef, pork and poultry. Raw bar with wide variety of oysters. Delicious desserts. AND a late night menu!!

July 2013 -Sunday Brunch review I highly recommend their breakfast entrees. Excellent! This was my second visit for breakfast; the first being in May 2013 when they first added Sunday brunch. Food is fresh and tasty, prices value oriented, and the garden setting is relaxing. On my first visit in May customers were given complementary lemon scones which were heavenly. They still serve these lemon scones but they are no longer complementary. They are still heavenly though they'll cost you $3 On this visit I had the Whitefish Benedict on Irish soda bread ...sumptuous ($13). My daughter had the scrambled du jour with garden-fresh zucchini and planchette ($11)-equally scrumptous). Both entrees came with home-fried potatoes. StoneCreek coffee -Brazilian blend -was served ($3). The only reason that I did not give this restaurant 5 stars is because they no longer serve the petite complementary scones which was unique and above and beyond. If you are looking for a Sunday breakfast spot in a Zen-like setting rather than in the busy confines of Sister Bay or Fish Creek - The Wickman House in Ellison Bay is worth the drive. August 2012 New owners have transformed the dining area of the former elegant T.Ashwell's into a more simple, yet quaint dining atmosphere reminiscent of a rural Massachusetts inn; a black and white theme, dim candle lights with a large stone fireplace as a focal point. It was a rainy, cool August night when we dined there. I started with a cup of the soup du jour ($7) which was a pureed spinach and kale creation with a touch of creme fraiche decoratively drizzled on top. Excellent! From there though the food and presentation was rather mediocre. I ordered the 8oz grassfed Waseda burger for $13. This generous-sized burger served on a freshly baked hamburger roll with tomato, onion, and lettuce was tasty. And though it said on the menu that the burger was served with bacon and sharp cheddar cheese I didn't realize until I was finished eating that I never tasted the bacon or the cheese; perhaps they went missing? The burger comes with fries but our server gladly offered to replace the fries with fingerling potatoes (delicious) upon my request. The other entree we ordered was the pulled pork sandwich for $14, also served on a fresh hamburger roll thought the menu states it is served on a baguette. The coleslaw and barbeque sauce are on the sandwich. It also comes with fries. This sandwich was not as hearty and tasteful as the burger but it was good. Looking around at other patron's entrees it was clear that the kitchen staff needs to spend a bit more time on plate presentation. The grilled NY strip steak ($29), the most expensive item on the menu, was brought to the table in an unappetizing mound (the vegetables on the bottom, mashed potatoes on top of that and the steak on top of it all). Plates lacked garnish and decorative flair. A couple of glasses of Chardoney ($7) and a few full-bodied stout beers ($5) later we were ready to call it a night. Our check total without tip came to $62 - reasonable for a Door County venue, though we ordered the least expensive items on the menu.

I knew I was home when I sat at the bar, the sight of bow-tied bartenders before me. Home. Yes. With a tinge of "Overlook Hotel" thrown in (name that movie). Wickman House is a step back in time, teetering on Door County hipster, but not taking the final step over the edge. Maybe if there was a great handlebar mustache for good measure. The good measure comes in the form of their pours, in their craft cocktails, more specifically. Try ANY on their categorized spirit menu, and you are certain to find your new favorite. Well, that is until you try another, and maybe another. Beautiful oversized ice cubes nest inside gently crafted Sazeracs and Negronis. There is a passion here, and not just found in the delicate handling of beverages, but also in the food. I have not found a comparable or better wedge salad on the planet. Wickman House trumps all others, even the supposed Kings of Wedge, the supper club. No. No. Here is best, and so wonderfully rich and drenched in a delicious blue cheese dressing. I could have licked the plate, but I have manners. I was with company. I followed up my salad with a bowl of mussels, and a double portion of crisp baguette for dipping purposes. Lord knows I love to dip. Too, I enjoyed dipping the resident Wickman [Parker] House rolls. So fluffy and buttery, it yearned for some mussel broth to make it even better. No dessert to end my meal, but that was only because the two craft cocktails were like liquid dessert. Anything with creme de violette, enough said. But, definitely try the Berry Fizz too. I found it akin to a liquid version of blueberry pie with a fizzy tickle to make it a good time in a glass. Tell me, why have I not been here before? All I know is that I will be back again.

What a great restaurant. Went last night and I have to say it is one of the finest places I have ever visited. Open late (everything closes at 9 around here) -serve food until 11. Now you can go to the Players and stop off for a cocktail! Otherwise imposible up here. And what cocktails. They were making Mint Julips, Mojeto's (spelling??). Great selection. Thank you for a great menu and suroundings.

A restaurant worthy of returning to Door County just for the food (lots of locally sourced food) and service at this restaurant. Beautiful location and ambience. Casual and upscale at the same time. Recommended by Rachel our server at Wild Tomato in Fish Creek. Thanks Rachel! We arrived with no reservation and thankfully were able to eat at the bar. We had a mixed green salad with the blue cheese dressing. My husband and I order blue cheese dressing often. This is the best blue cheese dressing dare I say ever? I had salmon on a bed of beautiful perfectly cooked vegetables grown in the sous chef's garden. Delicious. And the sauce!, I really wanted to lick the plate. My husband had prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. This was perfectly cooked and delicious as well. The beautiful cheese and house cured meat tray with a garlic aioli?, pickled local mushrooms, baby cukes and olives and a sweet chopped apple was a perfect ending to our meal. We asked to thank the chefs at the end of the meal. They rocked it. The bartenders Mike and Anthony were phenomenal. Great recommendations, friendly, knowledgeable. We could tell they loved what they did and knew what they were doing. Mike is one of the owners too. Kudos to him and his restaurant. When we come back we will book our dinners here and be "regulars" during our stay. The only negative I could find is they aren't open for breakfast, lunch and dinner so we eat there all day! ;)

This restaurant inspired me to write my very first Yelp review. Not having done my research beforehand, my expectations weren't high, however, I had a great evening and a wonderful meal here. The atmosphere feels like your in someone's home with candles lit and the windows open, relaxing and enjoying a delicious meal - there just happens to be others eating there as well. The space seems perfect for an event, perfect amount of cozy and elegant. Our table started with their cheese plate - I feel cheese and charcuterie plates can be so boring but this one was so thoughtfully put together. The highlights being a great gouda studded with fenugreek and an amazing blackberry pepper jam which was the perfect balance of sweet and savory, tart and spicy. I ordered the cioppino, which, given that we were in Wisconsin could be gamble and these types of dishes can very easily underwhelm (tiny scallops, paltry portions of seafood and most often, bland broth); however this classic stew was fantastic. All of the seafood was perfectly cooked and plentiful. It helped that it was all of my favorite seafoods, mussels (all too often overcooked), large plump scallops and shrimp and a local favorite, whitefish. The broth tasted as if it had been simmering for days to achieve the perfect depth and balance without overpowering delicate flavors of seafood. We also ordered a bottle of bordeaux which was full bodied and hearty. The only reason I can't give a fifth star is the service. While our server was attentive and polite he very much seemed as if he was a college kid working there for the summer and could really care less about our evening. He warmed up through out the meal, but you could tell he had very little experience. The owner did stop by at one point and was very gracious. Overall we had a wonderful meal and I will gladly be visiting again on my next visit to Door County

My wife and I are in Door County every fall around our anniversary and we typically hit up the same establishments. This time we decided to check out something new...Wickman House. We were there on Thursday October 11, our first night in Door County. My wife really doesn't like seafood at all but she gave in to my wishes because it was Crabfest Night! They didn't take reservations for 2 so we just decided to show up at around 7:30. We were seated immediately and given the choice of a table near the fire or bar, we chose the last seat near the cozy fireplace. The host that seated us (and every other gentleman working) was dressed in white button-up shirts and bow ties, which was a classy touch. The main dining area was most likely the main living room of the old, very large farmhouse. The fire was going and the environment was comfortable and inviting. The service was very good the entire night. We decided not to start off with an appetizer since i had the full intention of gorging myself on crab! I had a fantastic Coney Island beer, which the waiter informed me was chosen by one of the owners in an effort to bring a touch of New York to the Door County farm after working in NY. My wife had a nice glass of wine. Since the Crabfest is intended for 2 (or even 3) people i asked if i could get a single portion. They were more than happy to accommodate a half portion (half price) for just myself. My wife got the french dip with au jus and a side of french fries. The Crabfest lived up to my expectations and my wife had no complaints on the french dip! I was delivered a tin tray loaded with crab legs, mussels, corn, potatoes, melted butter, and sriracha tartar sauce. The steamed crab and mussels were fantastic - i completely cleaned those up and ran out of space for potatoes and corn! My wife said the french dip was among the best she has had! It wasn't the local fast food shaved roast beef type meat. It was freshly sliced, pink in the middle roast beef. We really wanted to try the chocolate cake based on other reviews, but neither of us had the space to accommodate dessert. It was an overall great experience - great service, great atmosphere, great food. A new staple to our Door County dining.

Another successful first for the Wickman House - Sunday Brunch! They went classy and skipped the buffet (yeah!) They have put together an outstanding made to order menu. Our table enjoyed their fresh corned beef hash and eggs, the buscuits and gravy was said to be "amazing", the egg/vege scramble delicious. Look forward to trying the huevos rancheros and eggs benedict on irish soda bread. Brunch started with complementary scones. Their pastry chef is truly special and these scones were out of this world. Mimosas and Gramosas (grapefruit/proseco) from the bar. Brunch is new to them so I'll let slide that our waitress didn't ask how we like our eggs done and all fried eggs came out with hard yolks. We should have thought to order correctly! Fresh baked lightly toasted white bread included made that morning rhubarb compote that I had to control myself to not lick the remains from the serving dish. Well done WH! Thanks for making my mothers day a memorable one!

As far as restaurants in Door County go, you typically sacrifice either affordability or quality in exchange for ambiance, or ambiance for truly good down-home grub. Case in point is the ever popular Shoreline (average food, but great view) or Waterfront (out of my budget range). Not so with the Wickman House! Our first visit consisted of downing an excellent wine in the bar area, kindly recommended by the co-owner/bartender Matt. From there we thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of both the owners and employees, along with the chic-ishly cool rustic atmosphere that we returned to dinner soon after. Don't fill up on the phenomenal locally baked bread and dish of salted butter....believe me it's hard to resist! The staggering chicken is highly recommended, I was not expecting the flaky crisp outside (much like a classy fried chicken), and each bite was super flavorful and juicy with a delicious gravy that was smooth and not too heavy. The soup of the day was a cucumber gazpacho that was delicious and refreshing for the warm summer dinner. My boyfriend's ribs were also amazing, not overly sauced and a good portion. I was actually very satisfied with my portion of chicken, it looked smaller on first glance but definitely filled me up! Our dinner came out to a very reasonable price, both the entrees were sub-$20 so make sure to pay attention to the daily specials. This place does not have a lake view, but what you get is amazing gourmet food at very comparable prices to other restaurants around town, not to mention to absolute friendliness and genuine interest of the employees. Plus for once a place without the cheesy beach decor! :) The food was great but the awesome people seal the deal, I can't wait to see what they come up with by their next year of business.

What a find! We waited for our table outside on the expansive lawn while enjoying beverages and tossing a football around. We were seated on the porch which was ideal as we had a nice breeze and viewed the beautiful surroundings. Food and service were excellent. Menu has both sandwiches and entrees. I started off with the asparagus soup and had the burger. Didn't need any condiments as it was flavorful with the bacon, Wisconsin cheddar and pickled onions. One of the best burgers I've ever had! Plus the house made sweet pickles were incredible. We asked for an extra dish! Finished off the menu with an ice cream sandwich with apricot ice cream. Everything is fresh and local including the beer selection. Nice bar area with a piano player. We will definitely be back.

This restaurant just opened up this year, but has already figured out how to do it well. We were able to sit on the porch - beautiful. A small but excellent beer selection, and lots of wine by the glass for a small restaurant. The berry lemon-aid I had was delish! For apps, we had the soup de jour (a corn bisque) - YUMMY - and tried one of each of the fish & pork tacos. Not to take away from the fish taco, but the mole pork taco was our personal fav. For entrees, we had the staggering chicken & cioppino. Both were excellent & highly recommended. The potatoes with the chicken were wonderful & I wanted to take home a car full of them! For dessert we shared the vanilla creme brulee & I had to refrain myself from licking the dish. I can't say enough about the wonderful food & attentive staff!

If you're reading this review in hopes of deciding whether or not to patronize this restaurant, let me make the decision for you: yes, you should. We arrived at this restaurant about 25 minutes prior to our reservation. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks from the expansive drink menu, which included classics, many with a welcome modern twist. The cocktails were masterfully crafted right in front of us. Some of the beat drinks we have ever had. The atmosphere and old fashioned vibe at this bar were perfect. Finding out that the bartender that made our cocktails was the owner was awesome. Even before sitting for down for our meal, I was raving about the 5 star review I was going to be giving this place. After about 15 minutes, we were whisked away to our table. The professional nature of the staff was impressive. They were extremely polite and knew every last detail of the menu. We ordered appetizers (oysters Rockafeller and spinach dip) that were the perfect pre-meal snack. Finally we ordered our meals: a salmon special, New York strip steak, whitefish po'boy, and my meal, artisan salad and mussels. Everything was absolutely fantastic and tasted so, so fresh. Would recommend all of these dishes Overall, this restaurant gets an A++++ from me. Every detail has been meticulously planned, and it shows in a very good way. From the moment we walked in, a food experience began and didn't stop until we were pulling out of the parking lot. Go here and you won't stop talking about it for weeks to come.

Flank steak on the steak frites was perfect. The cheese board was a well rounded group of hard, soft and aged cheeses. The Hooks Blue is always a good call. My wife had the chicken and how they get the skin like that with the chicken juicy and tender is beyond me. The frites were great with a wonderful aoli. The cocktail menu is big and the old fashion is a fantastic experience. We were able to sit on the screened porch and were so glad to be out there. Can't wait to get back there next year during our yearly Door County trip.
